Demolition of several classroom buildings at the old Oxnard High School will
begin Monday and continue for the next four months.
That means the football field, track and bleachers at the site will be out
of bounds for safety reasons during the work, said city spokeswoman Christina Aerenlund.
The land cleared by the demolition will eventually become part of the future
Campus Park, she said. There is no timetable or budget for developing the park.
Two buildings and a gym on the 35-acre parcel will continue to be used by the
Police Activities League and other nonprofits, Aerenlund said.

City to renovate dilapidated gym
|
|
From staff reports
The city of Oxnard is getting ready to spend $835,887 to start renovating the gym
at the old Oxnard High School.
The W.D. Bannister building, which went up in 1952, includes a basketball field
house, a recreation room and a boxing gym. It is used by the city Recreation
Department and the Police Activity League.
The building is showing its age. In the field house, one of the two folding
bleachers can no longer be used, and the wood floor has water damage in places.
The heating system long ago ceased to work, and many of the windows are boarded up.
In the boxing gym, the floor is beginning to sag under the weight of the punching
bags and needs to be shored up.
It will cost $2.9 million to completely refurbish the facility, said Michael
Henderson, the city's general services superintendent. Meanwhile, the city will
try to get the most pressing things done with $420,887 in Community Development
Block Grant funds from this fiscal year and $415,000 in grant money from the
fiscal year starting July 1.
Work will likely start this fall, said Ralph Alamillo, a general services project manager.
The city will look for additional block grant funding and other grant money to
complete the gym renovation, Henderson said.
The gym and a two-story classroom building next door will be the sole survivors
of the old high school, long a vacant eyesore. The other structures on the
35-acre site that will one day be Campus Park are being demolished.
There is no timetable or budget for developing the park.

another bit of news from the Ventura Star on 08/12/2008
This is from a longer article concerning the Dallas Cowboys returning to practice in Oxnard
|
|
...
Oxnard was able to prepare the River Ridge fields for the Cowboys to use
despite the short notice. If the Cowboys return, however, the 25-acre plot
next to the Residence Inn by Marriott will likely no longer be available.
Weather is a plus.
Henderson said Oxnard already has an alternate training location in mind.
The old Oxnard High School, at West Fifth and South H streets, is being leveled,
and most of its buildings will be demolished by the end of September, according
to Henderson.
The city plans to use the 33 acres as park space, and having the Cowboys train
there wouldn't present a big challenge.
"In my mind, that's the easiest place to do it," Henderson said. "We would
have plenty of room to arrange the construction of the fields and make parking
work, and the team could stay at a nearby hotel and be bused in for practice."
There is little doubt the Cowboys players wouldn't mind returning to Oxnard.

Well, classmates, the school is almost gone.
I almost did not take any pictures today since there is not much more than piles of foundation concrete.
However, after leaving the campus, I returned to take these pictures knowing that I would always wish I had done it.
This first picture is three pictures "stitched" together showing piles of concrete from the shop and other foundations.
Note the Auto shop steps in the foreground. The pile of concrete to the right is the South bleachers

The North Bleachers are being leveled
I was really shocked as I drove by the old school today,
since I was told that the North bleachers would not be torn down.
I guess I was misinformed since they were almost gone by the time I saw them.
I would like to have gotten a picture of the bleaches in the early stage of their destruction, but
at least they left the fence around Houser Field with the yardage signs so that these pictures have some reference.

I was told that the gym would not be torn down, but that the swimming pool would be removed.

I would like to have gotten some pictures of it being removed,
but all I have is some pictures the back of the gym with no pool.

It seems the the demolition work is completed - there has been no activity in the past weeks.
I do not know when the Park will be completed since the city says it does not have the funds.
So it may sit as it is for the present time.
